Dr. Wilhelm Emilsson and Dr. Sarika Bose of the English Department, University of British Columbia,
invite you to a conference on Oscar Wilde. This conference will be held to commemorate the
centenary of Wildes death on November 30, 1900, at Green College. Although the conference proper
will begin on Friday, December 1, there will be a Memorial Night on Thursday, November 30,
at which there will be various readings from Wildes works.
Wilde 2000 will be held on Friday, December 1 and Saturday, December 2, 2000. The general theme of the conference is "The Modern Wilde." The focus will be on Wilde "the theorist," rather than Wilde "the martyr," and his significance to his own time and ours.
On the first day of the conference Wilde be approached through three different mediums: theatre, opera, and text. The focus on this night will be Salome. Two papers on Salome in performance will be followed by the performance of a scene from the play.
On the second day of the conference there will be a series of papers on Wilde. At the end of the day, the Green College Theatre Society will present the rarely-performed, four-act version of The Importance of Being Earnest.
There will be an exhibition of rare Wilde materials in the Special Collections Division of the Main Library, University of British Columbia, starting in November. Among its treasures, the Library has a first edition of The Picture of Dorian Gray.
