Gender & Genre in Children’s Literature

“No book is really worth reading at the age of ten which is not equally (and often far more) worth reading at the age of fifty and beyond”– C. S. Lewis

In this section of English 468A we will read a range of texts written for children including traditional fairy tales, works of fantasy and social realism.  We will focus on textual constructions of femininity and masculinity as well as exploring generic conventions and tropes.  In discussions and written assignments, students will be asked to consider social/historical factors influencing the production and reception of children’s literature, its ideological role in promoting social change and the advent of queer-friendly and inclusive children’s works.
