Sex, Drugs, and Rock ‘n' Roll Note: To register for this course, you must e-mail the Coordinator. Put ENGL 466E in the subject line. Sex, Drugs, and Rock and Roll looks at rock ‘n' roll culture and popular culture. The course will examine the way in which this cultural movement had an impact on cultural production and vice versa. What role do the social and cultural environments have on rock music? We will look into how the social and culture environment is formed and what role it has on rock music and vice versa. This course will examine the culture itself through music recording and performance and through its reflection in the non-musical genres of popular narrative (movies, novels), journalism, and music autobiography and biography. We will look at the way music from the punk movement of the 70s onward creates culture and the way in which it reflects the culture that its predecessors created and comments on it. The core media list is required reading/listening/viewing, but a secondary list, involving various genres and media, will be developed throughout the class and will be used to contribute to the course as needed. This course is open to upper level students and a brief statement of interest will be required. Please note that this seminar has been approved to fulfill ENGL 490 requirements for English Majors if requested by the student.
