Sex and Sensibility in Eighteenth-Century Fiction

Sex is everywhere in the eighteenth century and attitudes towards it are as varied and interesting as the genres of fiction that were developed to describe and debate it.  The aim of this course is to consider the relationship between attitudes toward sexuality, love, and emotion and the ‘rise’ of the novel during that century.  The novels, 4 by men and 4 by women, range from the semi-pornographic to the deeply moralistic and from the scandalous to the philosophical.  Readings of fiction will be supplemented by selections from the moral philosophy and popular culture of the period as well as recent critical and theoretical studies.

Texts:

  • Haywood, Love in Excess
  • Defoe, Roxana
  • Richardson, Pamela
  • Fielding, Joseph Andrews
  • Cleland, Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure
  • Scott, Millennium Hall
  • Wollstonecraft, Wrongs of Woman
  • Austen, Sense and Sensibility
