INTRODUCTION

The Department of English is governed by the policies and procedures of the University of British Columbia and the Faculty of Arts. The Department Handbook is intended as a guide to colleagues on questions of departmental organization, structure, governance, policies, and best practices.

The current text was updated in 1999 by the Policy and Planning Committee and through the considerable efforts of Dr. Stephen Partridge with the assistance of Dr. Paul Yachnin. It is understood, however, that frequent revision is always necessary to keep pace with department life. Therefore, further minor revisions and the addition of several new policies or guidelines (Addenda) were incorporated in the Handbook in 2001.
