FIRST-YEAR ENGLISH AT UBC VANCOUVER

If you are considering the possibility of taking an English Major, English Minor or English Honours at UBC, you will need to complete six credits of first-year Writing and Literature.

As of September 2009, all students entering the Faculty of Arts directly from secondary school (and without any credit for English 112) may choose to meet the first three credits of the new Research and Writing Requirement with:

  • ENGL 100 (Reading and Writing about Literature)
  • ASTU 150 (Arts Studies in Writing)
  • Arts One Program
  • Coordinated Arts Program (CAP)

For students considering pursuing the study of literature at UBC, we recommend English 100, though, of course, students who take ASTU 150, the Coordinated Arts Program (CAP) or Arts One are also eligible and welcome to apply for an English Major, Minor, or Honours program.

All students who intend to take a First-Year English course must meet the LPI Requirement or be exempted.

ABOUT ENGL 100

English 100 is the new writing-intensive introduction to the disciplines of literary studies through the exploration of texts in their critical contexts. Students will read literary texts and scholarly responses to them as a way of learning about how we study literature in the University.

If you intend to enter the Majors, Minors or Honours Program, you must complete one of English 110, 111 or 120 in addition to the three credits of writing in order to be eligible for studies in Second-Year English.

NOTE: If you successfully complete Arts One or the Coordinated Arts Program, you will have completed the six-credits of First Year English studies necessary to take 200-level English.
