Second-Year English
The Department of English offers a variety of courses at the second-year level.
Course prerequisites for 200-level English are as follows:EITHER (a) ARTS 001, OR (b) two of ENGL 100, 110, 111, 112, 120, 121, OR (c) ASTU 100A (6 credits), OR (d) ASTU 100B (3 credits) and one of ENGL 110, 111, 120, 121, OR (e) ASTU 150 and one of ENGL 110, 111, 120, 121, OR 6 transfer credits of first-year English.
Intending English literature majors are required to take ENGL 220, which will introduce them to the tradition of English literature. ENGL 221 introduces the study of literature in Britain from the 18th century to the present; ENGL 222 offers the opportunity to study the ways in which Canada's literature reflects and shapes the Canadian experience; ENGL 223 examines literature in the United States, and ENGL 224 looks at world literature published in English. ENGL 225, 226, and 227 are courses focussed on the study of major kinds of literature--poetry, drama, and fiction respectively. ENGL 228 and 229 are courses focussing on current research interests in English studies: ENGL 228 will look at topics in literary and cultural studies; ENGL 229, a required course for those intending to major in English language and recommended for intending language minors, will look at topics in language and/or rhetoric and discourse studies. Finally, ENGL 230 should prove of interest to students wishing to study the Bible and the Classical traditions in order to understand their influence on literature and culture.

** Unlike the other courses on this list that are designated as 3.0 credits only, English 228 and 229 are listed as 3.0-6.0 credits. This means that students may take one section of the course for 3.0 credits or two different 3.0 credit sections of the course (each one focussed on a different topic) for a total of 6.0 credits.
