STUDENTS

Lise Jaillant has won a UBC Graduate Student International Research Mobility Award. This grant will allow her to work in the Oxford University Press archives in England in August 2012. Lise is writing a dissertation on “Highbrow,” “Middlebrow,” or “Modern”? Random House and the Modern Library Series, 1917-1955.” Her supervisory committee consists of John X. Cooper, Ira Nadel, and Leslie Howsam (University of Windsor).

 

 

 

ALUMNI

Julie Okot Bitek, who completed her MA under the supervision of Michael Zeitlin, Laura Moss, and Margery Fee, has just begun a doctorate as a Liu scholar at the Liu Institute for Global Issues under the supervision of Drs. Pilar Riano-Alcala (Social Work) and Erin Baines (Liu Institute).  Her subject is the stories of formerly abducted women in northern Uganda. Photo by Kalina Okot Bitek.

 

After majoring in English at UBC, Alexis Foo graduated with an MA in literature and language from Queen's University in 2009 and has recently completed her MSt in Creative Writing at Oxford University under the supervision of UK poet Jane Draycott. As part of her graduating thesis at Oxford, Alexis has written a collection of poetry titled The Astronomy of Mars which explores the subjects of memory, nostalgia, and dissociation.

 

 

 

 

 

Lauren Schachter has been admitted into the doctoral programme in the Department of English at the University of Chicago. She completed her BA and MA in this department, working with Professors Patricia Badir, Michael Zeitlin, Christina Lupton, and Miranda Burgess.

 

 

 

 

 

 

CONFERENCE

The 11th Conceptual Structure, Discourse, and Language Conference will be held at UBC starting May 17 to 20, 2012. This year's theme is "Language and the Creative Mind." The conference will give all researchers interested in cognition, communication, and the creative mind an opportunity to work towards a more integrated approach.
